Licensing Law Tracker

Tennessee licenses private investigators and investigation companies through the Department of Commerce and Insurance’s Detection Services Licensing Program, run by the commissioner since the Private Investigation and Polygraph Commission was abolished in 2021. Since 2023, the citizenship rule has changed from “citizen or resident alien” to “U.S. citizen or qualified alien,” a single tracking device placement can count toward stalking, and the department itself is set to terminate June 30, 2027 unless continued.

  • Programs may sign reciprocal licensing agreements
