Licensing Law Tracker
Rhode Island private detectives are licensed by the city or town where their principal place of business is located, not by a state agency. The Private Detective Act has not been amended since 2019. Adjacent laws have changed: a data privacy act and a judicial privacy law took effect January 1, 2026, a 2026 law made impersonating a person or business to defraud a felony, and the fee for process service by sheriffs and constables rose to $70.
