Licensing Law Tracker

Maine licenses professional investigators and investigative assistants through the Chief of the State Police. A 2026 law eliminated the Board of Licensure of Professional Investigators effective July 29, 2026, leaving licensing qualifications and fees unchanged. Since 2023 Maine has also revised its stalking and terrorizing laws, made investigative record copies free for crime victims’ agents, including licensed investigators, and regulated employer electronic surveillance.
